Nairobi—President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has announced plans to replace impeached deputy president Rigathi Gachagua as the ruling party’s deputy leader.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is poised to remove Rigathi Gachagua from his leadership role pending the court’s ruling on his impeachment case.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, October 29, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar announced that once the court reaches a verdict, Gachagua will be dismissed from the party leadership, making way for Kithure Kindiki to assume the position of deputy party leader.
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) awaits this court decision to proceed with the leadership change.
“Once the process in the courts has been concluded, we will sit down as a party and we make sure that we replace the deputy party leader with the new one,” Omar said.
The UDA secretary general further asked Gachagua to settle his political scores outside the courts.
“If he wants to go and regroup himself and re-organise politically we wish him all the best but let us move on,” he added.
Japheth Nyakundi, UDA’s national treasurer and MP for Kitutu Chache, previously accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of promoting tribal politics.
Nyakundi criticized Gachagua for showing limited interest in engaging with Kenyans from diverse regions, emphasizing that the nation needs leaders dedicated to unity.
He further argued that Gachagua should be removed from the party’s leadership, asserting that he is unfit for the deputy president’s role due to charges of gross misconduct and other serious concerns.
