Who’s behind ‘Maandishi Haya Sio Mageni’ phrase?

Pheona Kenga, an award-winning journalist who has worked at Citizen TV, TV47 and Look Up TV, coined the phrase, which has since been immortalised on social media platforms.

“Maandishi haya si mageni jijini, labda kwa mgeni jijini. Ila kwa wenyeji wa jiji, ni maandishi tulioyazoea,” she famously said.

The line roughly translates into:

“These writings are not new in the city except for visitors. However, city dwellers are used to them.”

The journalist’s close friend, who sought anonymity, told trendynews.co.ke that Pheona’s creativity was underrated.

“This phrase, for instance, has multiple levels to it.”

Kenyans have used the phrase to refer to scenarios in which the gullible are taken advantage of in relationships or business dealings.

Several women brought up the lies men tell, including saying that they are the most beautiful in the world and they would never cheat on them.
