At least 35 people were killed, with dozens more injured. The incident unfolded as locals, primarily middle-aged and elderly residents, were exercising on the track in Xiangzhou District.
Witnesses described the car looping around the track, striking people in every direction, leaving a trail of devastation.
The 62-year-old suspect, surnamed Fan, was apprehended after attempting to flee but fell into a coma from self-inflicted wounds. Video footage showed people lying motionless across the track, and a firefighter was seen performing CPR on a victim as first responders worked to clear the area.
Social media discussions were swiftly censored, with few posts on Weibo and news articles taken down as the Zhuhai Airshow was set to begin.
This tragedy is part of a worrying trend in China, where lax safety standards contribute to frequent, deadly traffic incidents. The Xiangzhou sports center, normally a community hub, has since announced its closure, leaving a once-vibrant space marked by grief and unanswered questions.
