A tragic accident occurred near the Yala bridge in the Iguhu area when a tanker traveling from Kisumu to Kakamega collided with two 14-seater matatus.

The crash resulted in the immediate death of ten people and left twenty others injured, according to a report by NTV Kenya. The bodies were transported to the Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital mortuary, while the injured received emergency medical treatment at nearby hospitals.

Local witnesses described the moments leading up to the disaster. One witness called the accident a “national disaster,” noting the high number of fatalities and uncertainty about the cause.

“We’re yet to understand whether the trailer lost its brakes, but all the passengers in the two matatus lost their lives,” he shared.

Another witness explained that the tanker appeared to be speeding and lost control upon approaching a bump, colliding with one matatu, which then crashed into the other.

“The trailer was moving very fast, and upon reaching this bump, it lost control and hit one of the matatus, which then collided with the one behind it.

Although we tried to save as many people as possible, many lost their lives. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent care,” he recounted.

According to TRENDYNEWS.co.ke, a teacher from Chavakali Boys High School recounted a harrowing experience when his car overturned at the notorious Iguhu black spot on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

He explained that he encountered a trailer loaded with sugarcane parked in his lane due to a mechanical issue. In an attempt to avoid a collision with an oncoming bus, he swerved abruptly, causing his car to roll multiple times, narrowly escaping with his life.
