Bungoma Bishop Gratefully Accepts KSh 5M Donation from Ruto: “I Will Not Return It”

On Sunday, December 1, President William Ruto contributed KSh 5 million to St. Chrispinus Anglican Church in Bungoma town during a church service.

Bishop George Mechumo of the Bungoma Diocese, who led the mass, affirmed his decision to retain the donation, emphasizing its importance to the church despite a recent controversy surrounding the Catholic Church rejecting a similar gesture.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka defended the practice of politicians making church contributions, arguing that such actions align with biblical principles and reflect genuine support for the faith community.

This latest donation highlights Ruto’s continued engagement with religious institutions across Kenya.

William Ruto Donates KSh 5M to Bungoma Church

On Sunday, December 1, Governor Kenneth Lusaka presented President William Ruto’s KSh 5 million donation to St. Chrispinus Anglican Church in Bungoma town. While handing over the funds, Lusaka lightheartedly remarked that he hoped the church would not return the president’s generous contribution.

The Bungoma governor also defended the practice of politicians supporting churches, stating that such acts are rooted in biblical teachings and demonstrate their commitment to faith-based initiatives.

“The president has send me with his donation of KSh 5 million but I hope the bishop will not return those donation. There is nothing wrong with leaders contributing to God’s work. The Bible encourages us to honour the Lord with our resources,” Lusaka said.

Bungoma Diocese Bishop George Mechumo, who led the mass, assured Governor Lusaka that he had no intention of rejecting Ruto’s donation. He dismissed criticism of church contributions, emphasizing their importance in supporting and advancing the church’s mission.

“I will not return the donation. There is no harm in accepting donations intended for God’s work,” Mechumo said.

Ruto Calls for Harmony Between Church and State Amid Recent Tensions

President William Ruto has urged an end to the ongoing tensions between clergy and government officials following the rejection of his donation by the Soweto Catholic Church. The discord arose after the Catholic Church declined a KSh 5.6 million contribution from the president, citing a breach of its guidelines on accepting gifts.

Speaking during an interdenominational service in Kimana, Kajiado South, on Sunday, December 1, Ruto highlighted the importance of peace and unity. He called on state officials and religious leaders to set aside their differences and collaborate in efforts to propel Kenya forward.
