4. SMS Code Discontinued
Unlike in previous years, accessing KCSE results via SMS is no longer an option.
This change followed the discontinuation of the SMS code before the 2023 results were released, as announced by the former Education Cabinet Secretary (CS), Ezekiel Machogu.
“We have engaged engineers to ensure the system operates seamlessly, unlike previous experiences with the SMS code,” Machogu explained.
Overview of the 2024 KCSE Examinations
The 2024 KCSE exams were conducted from October 22 to November 22, with students sitting for the exams at 10,755 centers across the country. This year marked a record-high number of candidates compared to 2023.
Before releasing the results, CS Ogamba presented them to President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi. Ruto praised the education sector’s improvement, stating, “We are pleased with the ongoing enhancements in our education system, from curriculum enrichment to increased teacher recruitment and improved learning resources. As a result, performance has steadily improved across schools.”
Examination Security and Challenges
To prevent leaks and cheating, KNEC and the Ministry of Education implemented robust measures, including personalized exam papers with candidates’ names, index numbers, and school details pre-printed.
CS Ogamba also disclosed the establishment of special courts to prosecute individuals involved in exam malpractices.
Despite these efforts, the 2024 KCSE exams faced challenges, including allegations of cheating and the circulation of fake exam materials. Some teachers were implicated in aiding students by leaking test papers.
Additionally, exam supervisors, invigilators, and markers raised concerns over poor pay, further highlighting operational challenges.
Tragic events, including the deaths of students from various schools during the exam period, added to the difficulties surrounding this year’s exams.
Timeline and Commitment
The release of the 2024 KCSE results follows KNEC’s earlier publication of the 2024 KPSEA results. The Ministry of Education upheld its commitment to releasing results for both exams in early January.
