NTSA Impounds Two ‘Moneyfest’ Matatus Over Reckless Driving
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday impounded two matatus branded ‘Moneyfest’ after they were caught on video blatantly violating traffic regulations.
The viral video, shared widely on Wednesday, January 7, showed the matatus, which operate along the Nairobi-Rongai route, being driven recklessly with passengers dangerously perched atop the vehicles.
In another clip, one of the overloaded matatus narrowly avoided colliding with a Mercedes-Benz while attempting to overlap on a busy Nairobi road.
The footage sparked outrage among Kenyans, who expressed concern about the risks posed by rogue Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
Responding to the uproar, NTSA issued a statement on Thursday, January 9, confirming the impoundment of the vehicles. The authority revealed that the matatus were linked to George Ruto, son of President William Ruto.
“We appreciate the alert. The two PSVs have been impounded and are currently at the Police Station for further processing,” NTSA stated in response to a concerned citizen.
The ‘Moneyfest’ matatus first gained notoriety in August 2024 after being linked to a senior government official’s family. Rongai residents have since raised multiple complaints, accusing traffic officers of turning a blind eye to the matatus’ misconduct.
“These vehicles seem untouchable. Their drivers wield more influence than the traffic officers,” a resident lamented in August.
The matatus have been accused of violating numerous regulations, including skipping designated stages, lacking Sacco identification, and picking up and dropping off passengers arbitrarily.
NTSA warned that flouting traffic laws could result in severe penalties. In a recent case, a driver’s license was revoked for a year after he was caught swerving dangerously en route to Makuyu. The driver was fined KSh 120,000, while the matatu owner faced an additional KSh 20,000 fine.
