A tragic road accident at Nyachabo along the Migori Highway has claimed one life and left several passengers injured.
The accident occurred Thursday evening when a bus, packed with passengers, lost control and veered off the road, plunging into a ditch. The vehicle was en route to Migori Town from Kehancha in Kisii at the time of the crash.
According to reports, the deceased, who died on the spot, was a crew member of the bus, possibly the manager.
Rescuers arrived promptly, working to free passengers trapped in the wreckage. The injured were given first aid at the scene before being rushed to various hospitals in Migori.
Images and videos from the scene showed a large crowd of residents gathered around the bus as rescuers intensified their efforts. The bus lay tilted on its side, its windscreen shattered, and broken glass scattered across the site.
Rising Road Carnages
This accident adds to the growing number of road fatalities reported in the country since the beginning of the year. Just a week ago, ten people perished in a grisly collision between a lorry and a matatu on the Kitale-Eldoret Highway.
According to Uasin Gishu Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the accident occurred when a lorry, ferrying pipes from Kitale to Eldoret, lost control and crashed into an oncoming matatu. Nine people died on the spot, while five others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
NTSA’s Safety Warning
The surge in road accidents this month has prompted the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to urge road users to prioritize safety, especially for children traveling to and from school. The Authority has emphasized adherence to traffic laws, including observing speed limits and exercising caution on highways.
NTSA has also reiterated that all passenger vehicles must be roadworthy, have valid insurance, and be fitted with speed limiters to enhance road safety.
